Storing and Reheating Hot Dogs, Chili and Sausages

The safest and best-tasting leftovers usually come from storing the meat, chili, toppings and buns separately. That prevents soggy bread and lets each component be reheated appropriately.

Refrigerate promptly

Place perishable leftovers in the refrigerator within two hours, or within one hour in weather above 90°F/32°C. Use shallow containers for chili and large batches so they cool more efficiently.

Store components separately

ComponentStorage approach
Hot dogs or cooked sausageCovered container; keep separate from buns
ChiliShallow covered container
Chopped onions and slawSeparate cold containers
BunsRoom-temperature or frozen according to package; keep dry

Reheat without damaging texture

Warm meat and chili separately until safely hot, then assemble in a fresh or gently warmed bun. A skillet, steamer or microwave can work for fully cooked links; raw leftovers should only exist if they were safely cooked before storage.

Use judgement, labels and official guidance

Discard food with uncertain time or temperature history. Smell and appearance cannot prove that food is safe. Follow current public-health guidance and package storage instructions.
