Hot Dog Sauces, Relishes and Mustards

Condiments are not interchangeable. Heat, sweetness, acidity, texture and water content change how a finished dog tastes and holds together.

Mustard choices

Yellow mustard is bright and familiar; spicy brown has deeper spice; Dijon is sharper and smoother; whole-grain adds texture.

Relish and onion sauces

Sweet relish adds sugar, acid and crunch. Fresh relish can add cucumber, onion and herbs with less sweetness. Drain watery relishes.

Cheese and creamy sauces

Warm cheese sauce should be thick enough to stay on the dog. Creamy sauces work best in thin lines.

Homemade storage

Refrigerate homemade sauces and relishes promptly, use clean utensils and date containers.
