Corn Dogs and Korean-Style Battered Dogs

Both put a sausage or filling on a stick and fry it in batter, but the batters, coatings, sweetness and fillings can be very different.

American corn dogs

A classic American corn dog uses a cornmeal-containing batter around a hot dog, fried until browned. Mustard is a common accompaniment.

Korean-style dogs

Korean-style battered dogs may use yeasted or thicker batter, cheese, sausage-and-cheese combinations, potato cubes, crumbs or other coatings.

Frying structure

  • Dry the filling so batter adheres.
  • Avoid crowding.
  • Maintain the recipe’s oil temperature.
  • Drain on a rack.
  • Let hot cheese cool briefly before biting.

Party service

Battered dogs are best in small fresh batches. Hold them loosely vented to protect crispness.
